AirPods and other true wireless earbuds look simple: open the case, put them in, press play. But there is a lot more they can do. Below are the most useful tips — first a few AirPods features for iPhone users, then tricks that work on almost any wireless earbuds, whether you use an iPhone or an Android phone.
AirPods tricks for iPhone users
Have Siri read your notifications
With Announce Notifications turned on, Siri reads incoming messages and alerts in your ears, and you can reply by voice without taking your phone out. Turn it on in Settings > Notifications > Announce Notifications, then choose which apps are allowed to announce.
Choose which AirPod uses the microphone
By default the microphone switches automatically between the left and right AirPod. If you often use just one, open your AirPods settings (Settings > Bluetooth, then tap the (i) next to your AirPods) and set Microphone to always left or always right.
Use Conversation Boost
On supported AirPods Pro models, Conversation Boost uses the microphones to focus on the person talking in front of you — helpful in noisy places or for anyone with mild hearing difficulty. You will find it in the iPhone’s Accessibility settings.
Find lost AirPods
Open the Find My app to see where your AirPods were last connected. Newer models can also be located through Apple’s Find My network and can play a sound so you can find them under a sofa cushion.
Read the status light
- Green — fully charged.
- Amber — charging, or less than one full charge left.
- Flashing white — ready to pair.
- Flashing amber — a pairing problem; you may need to reset them.
Reset AirPods when nothing else works
Put both AirPods in the case, close the lid for 30 seconds and open it again. On your iPhone, choose Forget This Device for your AirPods, then press and hold the setup button on the case for about 15 seconds until the light flashes amber, then white. Now pair them again.
Tips that work on most wireless earbuds
- Learn the touch controls. Single tap, double tap, triple tap and long press usually control play/pause, volume, track skip, calls and the voice assistant. Every model is different, so spend two minutes with the user manual.
- Find the right ear tip size. Most in-ear models come with extra tips. A proper seal gives fuller bass, better noise cancellation and a more secure fit.
- Use one earbud at a time. Many earbuds can play from a single bud while the other charges — useful for long calls or when you need to hear your surroundings.
- Turn on game or low-latency mode (if your earbuds have one) when gaming or watching videos, so the sound stays in sync with the picture.
- Keep the charging contacts clean. Dust or ear wax on the small metal contacts is the most common reason one earbud stops charging. Wipe them with a dry cotton bud — never use water.
- Clean the speaker mesh gently with a soft dry brush. Muffled sound is often just a blocked mesh.
- Stay within range. Bluetooth typically works up to about 10 metres, but walls and even your own body weaken the signal. Keeping your phone on the same side as the earbuds helps.
- Protect your hearing. A simple rule is to keep the volume around 60% and take a break every hour or so.

Quick troubleshooting checklist
- One earbud silent → clean the contacts, charge both buds, then reset and pair again.
- Sound out of sync in games → switch on game or low-latency mode.
- Weak bass → try a different ear tip size.
- Muffled calls → clean the microphone opening and keep your phone close.
- Connection drops → keep your phone within 10 metres, on the same side as the earbuds.
